Eat it to save it?

Though it may seem odd, celebrating seafood by eating it can be a sound ecological practice. This is especially true if you’re helping to drive market demand toward more sustainable seafood choices. Just as with heritage pork, the “eat it to save it” mantra applies to seafood, too.

New England Aquarium’s Celebrate Seafood dinner series continues. Click here for more details. This is a great opportunity to learn how to prepare sustainable seafood that you may be less familiar with.

For example, who’s had cobia? Anyone, anyone?

Try the FishPhone text messaging service to see how it works!

FishPhone text messaging service enables restaurant patrons, supermarket shoppers and chefs to make healthy, informed and sustainable choices when deciding which fish is right for them—and the environment. At the seafood counter or while contemplating a restaurant menu, consumers can:

- Send the message FISH and the name of the fish in question: say for example Chilean Sea Bass.

- Send the message to 30644

- Within seconds FishPhone will text back with Blue Ocean’s environmental
assessment.
(Standard text messaging rates apply.)

For example: if the evil fishmonger had a doubt about whether he should sell this endangered fish he was buying from pirates; he could simply have used Fishphone to find out. Here’s the message he would have gotten back:

Chilean Sea Bass
Really named Patagonian Toothfish, high market demand for this naturally long lived fish drives depletion and creates an incentive for continued illegal fishing. One very small Patagonian Toothfish fishery in the South Atlantic is being sustainably managed according the Marine Stewardship Council.
